Elon Musk on Tuesday announced a charge of $8 a month for Blue service. He tweeted, "Twitter's current lords & peasants system for who has or doesn't have a blue checkmark is a bullshit. Power to the people! Blue for $8/month.".

Overview

Having a blue tick on your Twitter account will ask you to pay $8 every month. Elon Musk, the new boss of Twitter, has announced a charge of $8 per month for Blue service that includes its sought-after "verified" badge. Musk is seeking to boost subscriptions and make this social media platform less reliant on ads. A blue tick mark next to an individual’s username on the Twitter handle confirms that the account belongs to the person or company claiming it. Twitter
is presently free for most users.

"Twitter's current lords & peasants system for who has or doesn't have a blue checkmark is bullshit. Power to the people! Blue for $8/month, "Musk tweeted, adding that “price adjusted by country proportionate to purchasing power parity."

Billionaire Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion last week and is already floating major changes for the social media network, starting with firing its previous chief and other top officials. On Tuesday, Twitter's advertising chief, Sarah Personette tweeted about her resignation from the post last week, adding further uncertainty for advertisers.

In a series of tweets, Musk on Tuesday explained that subscribers with a blue tick will get “priority in replies, mentions & search, which is essential to defeating spam/scam; ability to post long video & audio; half as many ads.” He added that subscribers will also get a “paywall bypass for publishers willing to work with Twitter.”

Musk's comments on current Blue services by Twitter follow media reports that he was monitoring the process of profile verification and how blue tick marks were provided to users. This verification badge has been given to noteworthy profiles based on its various criteria.

However, more than 80 percent of Twitter users who participated in a recent poll did not agree to pay for the blue tick mark. Some 10 percent said they can pay $5 a month. Twitter already has a subscription service called Twitter Blue, launched in June last year that offers access to features like an option to edit tweets.
