Whistleblower Frances Haugen has launched her non-profit organization Beyond the Screen which is devoted to provide tangible solutions for problems created when big tech companies fail in its "legal and ethical obligations to society.".

Overview

Whistleblower Frances Haugen has launched a non-profit organization dedicated to combating harm caused by social media. The organization will seek solutions to fight various issues created by social media, said Haugen on Thursday.

The former product manager at Facebook (renamed Meta Platforms), Frances Haugen hit the headlines last year after leaking documents that suggested the firm put profits before safety. It consisted thousands of leaked internal documents, which she said detailed the social media company's failures to protect teen girls on Instagram and putting a check on vaccine misinformation. However, Facebook has consistently said it disagrees with Haugen's depiction.

Her non-profit organization- Beyond the Screen- said that it will start with creating a document entailing ways that big tech companies are failing in their "legal and ethical obligations to society" and would come up with possible solutions to solve those problems.

Beyond the Screen will collaborate with Project Liberty, an organization that builds a new operating protocol for social networking, and Common Sense Media, which promotes safe media content for kids.
